Nothing makes me look forward to spring like a 31 degree day in Atlanta! We would like to invite you to Spring Back to Campus the weekend of April 3-5, 2009 – when the weather is much warmer! This weekend will offer families of Georgia Tech students the opportunity to come back to Tech and enjoy all the wonderful spring happenings on campus. Weekend events will include a memorable night at the Ferst Center, enjoying the spectacular performance of the Shen Wei Dance Arts; fun filled athletic events such as men’s baseball and women’s tennis; and the opportunity to lend a hand to improve campus through Tech Beautification Day and more. Volunteers Needed to Talk to Prospective Parents
The Parents Program and the Office of Admissions have several upcoming volunteer opportunities for current Tech parents to connect with prospective families. Your involvement is vital for the Institute to successfully engage families, answer questions and make their visit a positive experience. We are seeking volunteers for the following events.
Connect With Tech Sessions: Sunday, February 15 Sunday, March 1 Sunday, March 29 Sunday, April 5 Time: 5:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. Location: Bill Moore Success Center Volunteer Activity: Meet prospective parents and answer questions.
Women’s Receptions: Sunday, March 8 Sunday, April 19 Time: 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Location: Bill Moore Success Center Volunteer Activity: Staff table with Parents Program materials and talk with prospective parents about your experiences as a Tech Parent.
General Information Session: Saturday, February 28, 2009 Time: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Location: Student Center Volunteer Activity: Assist with participant check-in and provide insight into what it is like to be a Tech Parent.
College of Management Information Session: Saturday, April 4, 2009 Time: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Location: College of Management Volunteer Activity: Assist with participant check-in and provide insight into what it is like to be a Tech Parent.
Our goal is to make these potential parents feel welcome and informed as they visit campus. Body Image Awareness Month February is Body Image Awareness Month at Georgia Tech. Body Image Awareness Month promotes positive self awareness, including perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. During February, there will be discussions on topics such as media’s influence on body image and society’s definition of beauty. Auxiliary Services Loves Students Week
Auxiliary Services is celebrating its second annual Auxiliary Services Loves Students Week with fun, games and prizes during Valentine’s week February 9-14. Students may enter sweepstakes to win discounts from Barnes & Noble @ Georgia Tech, gift BuzzCards, rebates toward the cost of spring housing, reserved parking spaces, and dental services from Stamps Health Services. Plus, there will be plenty of fun-filled activities at the Student Center throughout the entire week with daily opportunities to win a 16GB iPod!
But the love doesn’t stop there. On Thursday, February 12, students and parents are encouraged to participate in Georgia Tech Night at the Georgia Aquarium. Enroll Now for Living Learning Communities Georgia Tech’s Living learning Communities (LLC) initiative, ThinkBig@Tech, will be available at the start of 2009-2010 academic year. ThinkBig@Tech will provide students and faculty the opportunity to interact in a social setting and build learning relationships around innovative, relevant and shared interests. With 14 communities planned for next fall, your student can select from a variety of options. To name a few: “The Opposite of Talk Radio,” led by Public Policy Associate Professor Dr. Richard Barke, will explore current events and the evaluation of the news; “Sustainability: Think Before You Build,” led by Architecture Assistant Professor Dr. Daniel Castro, will introduce students to sustainable building practices and the overall impact on society; “Servicio en la Comunidad Hispana,” led by Modern Languages Assistant Professor Kelly comfort, will give students the opportunity to practice their Spanish speaking skills and engage in service projects in the Hispanic community. Did you know that there are more than 900 pre-health students at Georgia Tech? That applies to students interested in becoming doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physician assistants, etc. On average, 140 students apply to medical school every year. Georgia Tech boasts a 53 percent acceptance rate to medical school; the overall national acceptance rate is about 42 percent. For Tech students who coordinate their efforts with the Office of Pre-Health Advising (OPHA), the acceptance rate may climb to 85 percent! Read entire article...
President’s Undergraduate Research Award (PURA)

Is your student participating in undergraduate research? Do they need a part-time job as well? If so, perhaps your student should apply for the President’s Undergraduate Research Award (PURA). PURA was established in 2002 to support students participating in research. Since its inception, more than 1,400 students have been awarded close to $2 million. Students are awarded either $1,500 for part-time work during one semester of the academic year or $1,000 to help offset expenses when invited to present their research at a professional conference. Georgia Tech Helps Company with New Products, Process Improvements Rotary Corporation, headquartered in Glennville, Ga., literally began from a car trunk when J.D. Nelson began selling replacement parts to auto parts stores and lawnmower dealers in 1956. By 1971, the company’s volume had increased to the point where Rotary began considering manufacturing its own lawnmower blades.
