
Playa Viva works to preserve sea turtle habitats

Playa Viva is a sustainable resort and turtle sanctuary located near Zihuatanejo, Mexico. It was founded to protect turtles from predators and poachers. A team of local residents staffs the sanctuary. The parent organization offers regular events so community members and visitors can take part in turtle releases and other opportunities. In 2007, sanctuary workers released 200,000 endangered baby sea turtles into the ocean. With limited resources, they hope to continue that work. Find out how you can help.

James Kass: Giving voices to urban youth

Robert Redford recognizes the work of James Kass in giving voice to Oakland, California, teens through Youth Speaks. The organization challenges young citizens of the world to find, develop, present and apply their ideas as creators of social change. Redford refers to Kass as a force of nature. "The hip, bold visionary has created a powerful space within our democracy from which young people can fly bravely out into the world with newfound voices, ‘bringing noise from the margins to the core,’ as James would tell you," Redford says.

The beauty of a mother’s love

Yet I witness so many good things happening, driven by wonderful people based on love, compassion and sound values. These people seem well-balanced emotionally and spiritually. So how do we reconcile that with those who espouse hatred or are emotionally volatile and violent? It appears we have to go back to basics: the mother-child connection.
