Understanding the President’s Climate Commitment
Toward a Carbon Neutral Florida Gulf Coast University

The Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education has long held “greening the university” as a critical dimension of our work. One of our objectives for this academic year is to provide advice and expertise to the administration on a variety of projects in environmental sustainability.

As part of this work, the Center commissioned a white paper designed to assist the Florida Gulf Coast University community in charting its path toward carbon neutrality as a Leadership Circle signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. “Understanding the President’s Climate Commitment: Toward a Carbon Neutral Florida Gulf Coast University,” was prepared by Center Advisor Dr. Rick Clugston for presentation to President Wilson Bradshaw, Provost Ronald Toll, and Vice President Joe Shepard.

We offer Dr. Rick Clugston's white paper for download as part of the Center’s commitment to education and action.

A Voice for Earth
American Writers Respond to the Earth Charter

Edited by A. James Wohlpart and Peter Blaze Corcoran

Jim Wohlpart and Peter Blaze Corcoran recently presented A Voice for Earth: American Writers Respond to the Earth Charter at the Miami Book Fair InternationalA Voice for Earth is a collection of poems, essays, and stories that together give a voice to the ethical principles outlined in the Earth Charter.  The Earth Charter was adopted in the year 2000 with the mission of addressing the economic, social, political, spiritual, and environmental problems confronting the world in the twenty-first century. Learn more about the Earth Charter www.earthcharter.org.

“Some of our finest writers here make vivid and real the aspirations embodied in the Earth Charter.  Efforts like this are our best hope for the future—across national borders, but also across borders of mind and heart.”  —Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature

A Voice for Earth is a wonderful compilation of responses to the challeneges the Charter represents and extremely valuable on that account.”  —Peter Mathiessen, author of Shadow Country

“This timely book is a significant contribution to the creation of a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world.” —Mirian Vilela, Executive Director, Earth Charter Initiative

The Center Establishes a Student Group

We are delighted to announce the creation of a student group to engage in the work of the Center at Florida Gulf Coast University!  S.A.G.E — Student Associates for a Greener Environment — includes 8 to 10 student leaders from the campus community. S.A.GE. is advised by Dr. Maria Roca, Senior Faculty Associate of the Center. This semester S.A.G.E created a monthly newsletter to inform FGCU students about sustainable life choices.  The group also met for vegan potluck to celebrate Thanksgiving in November.

If you are a student and would like to join S.A.G.E, please contact student assistant Angela Cisneros at acisner@eagle.fgcu.edu
