Commissioner's Bulletin September 2008

Subscription Services Available

Gene BentleyGo to our home page, www.rea.state.or.us, for more information on subscribing to the Commissioner's Bulletin, the first item to become available from the Agency through an e-mail subscription service. Those now receiving the Bulletin need not do anything as those names will automatically be placed on the subscriber's list. New subscribers will be able to sign up to receive e-mail notification when future bulletins are posted. Announcements will be made when other “publications” become available through this method.

Board Meeting Information

The Real Estate Board held a special meeting September 8 at the Real Estate Agency in Salem.

The purpose of the meeting was to review and approve for hearing, all the administrative rules that underwent review, and new rules for performing criminal background checks on prospective employees.

The next regular Real Estate Board meeting will be 10 a.m., October 6, 2008, at the Agency.

Rule Hearings Scheduled

The public hearings on the real estate broker licensing, property management and escrow rules are scheduled for 10 a.m., October 23, 2008, in the Agency's hearing room. The hearing notices and draft rules are available on our website.

2009 Board Meeting Calendar

The 2009 out-of-Salem Real Estate Board meetings have been tentatively scheduled: July 2009 Baker City, October 2009 hosted by the Mid-Columbia Board of Realtors, and December 2009 in the Portland area.

New Information Systems Person Hired

LeRoy Helton joined the Agency as the Information Systems Specialist on August 18. He has an AAS in Computer Science and most recently worked as a Network Technician and Phone System Administrator at Country Coach in Junction City.

Prior to that, LeRoy worked as a Systems Technician at GTS Services, a software development company in Portland.

Address Change Reminder

OAR 863-15-0062 requires all real estate licensees to maintain a current mailing address with the agency, which is used to send all written communications, including renewal notices and the OREN-J. The rule also requires that all real estate licensees notify the agency of a change in mailing address within 10 calendar days of the change of address.

There has been an increase in returned mail recently, and the agency is charged a fee for each returned piece. Contact the Licensing Division at (503) 378-4170 selection 2 with any questions.

How To Become A Principal Broker

Current statute requires:

  • Three years active licensed broker experience
  • Passing the broker licensing exam (there is not a separate principal broker exam)
  • Completing the Broker Administration and Sales Supervision (BASS) course
  • Supervision of another licensed broker
