Persistence Pays Off
Hi <<First Name>>,
Last weekend I attended the Biola Media Conference on the CBS Studio lot in Los Angeles. Organized by the Biola University Mass Communications Department, it's designed to empower and connect Christians working in Hollywood. We spent the day attending workshops, networking, and being inspired to excellence.
The first speaker of the day set the tone. Mark Zoradi, who went to work for Disney Studios right out of college, is now President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, a position he's held since 2006. Mark did a variety of jobs for Disney and steadily worked his way up the ladder to the top position.
He gave us great nuggets of wisdom that I've heard before but bear repeating for anyone who wants to succeed in business and in life. He challenged us to over-deliver in our jobs, doing our absolute best work at all times. That will open doors, leading to the next opportunity.
His best piece of advice was not to give up. He told of a man in France who pitched Disney on the idea of creating feature-length nature documentaries. They didn't think documentaries could succeed theatrically. When he brought March of the Penguins to them, its success convinced Disney to launch their first new branded film label in 60 years. The subject? Nature documentaries.
Nice guys do finish first, persistence does pay off, and do your best. That's great advice from someone at the top of their industry.
From the screening room,

Industry Interview Dog Days of Summer Director Mark Freiburger by Angela Walker
Mark Freiburger graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts in 2005, and has been a busy man since then. In the summer of 2007, he finished a four-year journey to create and direct his first feature length film Dog Days of Summer, just released on DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Let's start by talking about the film. When did you start working on it?
Mark: I wrote the first draft of the script when I was 19 and attending North Carolina School of the Arts. I wasn't happy with it, so I brought in Travis Beacham and Christopher Waild to help. Chris is now a writer for the TV show NCIS, and Travis wrote the new Warner Brothers' remake of Clash of the Titans that's in production now.
They were in the screenwriting school at the time, and I

Dove Review:
This is number seven from the "Love Come Softly" tales. Now into the third generation of the Clark family, Missy's daughter, Belinda, is a grown woman with a doctor's degree. She has lost her beloved Drew to illness. Belinda now questions her career and her faith when she goes west to a new town and practice.
As with past stories in this series, there are many lessons to learn regarding love, compassion and faith. Sometimes we all lose sight of our faith when our prayers are not answered in the way we hoped, but it does not mean that God is not listening. This story shows that He has a different plan for us sometimes than we have for ourselves. In "Love Takes Wing", Belinda finds God's plan to continue the legacy of the heartwarming story we all have fallen in love with. Everyone will enjoy this story as they did the others. We award this movie with our Dove "Family-Approved" Seal.
