Blogging from the Potomac

Hi <<First Name>>,

When does the past become history? Is it a matter of time or distance? We often hear the phrases "It’s history" or "That’s so yesterday!" I wonder where’s the tipping point at which it becomes something to be written about and studied?

News today is instantly created, reported and analyzed because a large percentage of the world’s population has instant access to information from around the globe. History is no longer reserved for textbooks and the academic elite. Anyone with a blog can instantly publish their interpretation and thoughts about current events.

Imagine George Washington at the Potomac River with a blogger in his boat, analyzing and second-guessing his every decision. Abraham Lincoln might have been friends with William Wilberforce through Facebook. Imagine the two of them exchanging instant messages about the abolitionist movement in England and the United States.

In 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson chose the second week of February as "Negro History Week" because it was the birthday of two prominent Americans who influenced the lives and social conditions of African-Americans in the United States: President Lincoln and former slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Now the entire month of February is dedicated to recognizing the significance of contributions made by African Americans.

Whether you read it in a book, online, or watch a film, spend some time studying our nation's history. As you realize the tremendous struggles we've had as a nation, you'll appreciate the richness of our past and perhaps find renewed hope for our future.

Industry Interview
Actress & Comedian Kerri Pomarolli
by Angela Walker

Kerri Pomarolli is a successful stand-up comedian, actor, author, and wife to Ron and mother of Lucy. Called to live and work in Hollywood, she draws strength from her family and friends, hoping one day to see her childhood dream of being in a movie on the big screen come true. I talked with her one morning about her faith, her family, and Hollywood on Fire.

What’s happening right now for you professionally?

Kerri:    I was just working on a treatment for the movie script of my book “Guys Like Girls Named Jenny.” I’m working with a great writer named Claire Lee who’s collaborating with me. She actually directed me in a film I was in this fall called Engaged. My husband and I got to be in it together. It’s going to premiere on cable TV. We had a theater showing in November, but SkyAngel has agreed to pick it up and show it. That was a really fun script to do.

My husband Ron wasn’t actually supposed to be in the film, but he came to one of the read-throughs and read the part of my father. He made the directors laugh so much they said, “We have to get him in this; he’s so funny.”

I’ve got some film companies that are interested in my book to turn it into a movie, so we’re hoping to get that produced. My goal is that it would be the first Christian lead character romantic comedy; kind of a Bridget Jones’ Diary with a Christian twist to it. I think that needs to be done.

Churches Urged to Support New Movie "Clancy"

The dark-haired girl stood trembling with fear in the cold back alley. A tear trickled down her cheek, stinging the cut on her upper lip – the one she had received from her abusive mother the night before. Her would-be kidnapper, a street thug, held a gun to her forehead as she stood silent, clinging to her half-starved puppy, Walter. Suddenly, and without warning someone yelled, “Cut! That was great!” Immediately, the dark-haired girl began to giggle, as Walter the Puppy started to lick her neck. Hayley the dog handler stepped over to take Walter back to his holding area while a production assistant quickly wrapped the girl in a warm wool blanket to protect her from the harsh February cold.

Dove Review:
This documentary is enlightening as well as nicely made. It features Dr. Larry Poland of Master Media International, a man whose organization promotes faith and family media. Other media giants are incorporated including Pat Boone, Jane Russell, and Stephen Baldwin. Included too are people in the film industry-producer Bill Ewing, who produced "The End of the Spear" and Howard Kazanjian, producer of "Return of the Jedi".
The thing that is most enjoyable about this documentary is how well it mixes quotes from Walt Disney and Benjamin Franklin, to comments made by people inside the entertainment industry, and the vast use of clips to the variety of people interviewed. It is a nice blending of important people. The clip of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stating that motion pictures had become a major force is a nice beginning. Ben Franklin's insightful comment that people who believe money will do everything will do everything for money is also quite insightful. Quotes from C.S. Lewis and a discussion of Walden Media's production of "The Chronicles of Narnia" is discussed, and a quote is given by J.R.R. Tolkien about deciding what to do in life with the time that is given to us.

Penelope Foster, producer, is quite a powerful witness as she speaks of her decision to remain in Hollywood, to bloom where she is planted, and the rewards and difficulties of following that decision. Chuck Norris adds his comments and the theme overall is that Hollywood is not something to be shunned, nor the arts, but are challenges to bring the Christian faith to its working people. This is a quality production and we gladly award our Dove "Family-Approved" Seal to it along with five Doves, our highest rating.

Pilgrim's Progress: Journey to Heaven - DVD
Pilgrim's Progress: Journey to Heaven - DVD

by Matthew Carr

"This is an EXCELLENT adaptation of John Bunyan's classic novel produced on a moderate budget. Obviously, this is not a film with a blockbuster budget a la "Independence Day," but its production values are superior to the first two "Left Behind" films as well. Praise God for stirring the hearts of this cast and crew toward this project!"

"I thought this movie was great. I wrote all my Christian brothers and sisters recommending this movie. The actress did a really good job of portraying a typical unbeliever with attitude and smart remarks. I also believe this is a good movie to witness to non-believers because of the information that was given. It answers most of the questions that most people ask. Great movie!"

"Our ladies class is in the process of using this movie along with our study of Esther, and it's proving to be great...I must agree with another rater, that it is not for those younger than 13-15, depending on the maturity of the girls. On the other had, anytime you share a movie about anything with your family, your wisest move it to review the movie first.  Outstanding movie!"
