A Christmas Carol

Hi <<First Name>>,

What’s your favorite Christmas carol? Do you like Joy to the World or Silent Night better? Are you a fan of The Little Drummer Boy or O Little Town of Bethlehem? Is Christmas a time of loud and joyful celebration of Jesus's birth, or a quiet contemplation of the difference He made coming to Earth?

I love the music of Christmas. It speaks of hope fulfilling promises long expected and desired. The classic carols are familiar and sung by people all around the world, regardless of religious or philosophical beliefs. Each year there are fresh interpretations of old favorites, as well as new songs with different perspectives on the Christmas story.

Who can forget Mark Lowry’s “Mary Did You Know?” that looks ahead to the significance of Jesus’ ministry and Lordship? This year a friend introduced me to Faith Hill’s beautiful new song “A Baby Changes Everything,” which considers the birth of Christ from Mary's perspective.

As you celebrate Christmas with family and friends, allow the  music created to celebrate our Savior’s birth to resonate deep within your heart. I hope you’ll find yourself singing often, and maybe you’ll even hear "angels bending near the earth.”

From the screening room,

"Doubt": As Dangerous as Certainty?

Review by Jeff Walls

When it came time to adapt his 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning play "Doubt" for the big screen, John Patrick Shanley decided to take up the directing reins himself.  It’s quite an undertaking for a guy whose only previous directorial effort is the least known and least successful of the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks romantic comedies, 1990’s "Joe vs. the Volcano."  It’s quite a departure both thematically and stylistically as well.

Doubt is one of those movies we seem to get every year which is remarkable for its acting and script, but as a movie overall it falls in the middle of the road.  The Oscar buzz that has been building for this film’s four lead performances is warranted and I would not be surprised if it earned multiple nominations.  As Sister Aloysius, perennial Oscar nominee and multiple winner Meryl Streep delivers nothing less than her typically exceptional performance, almost as scary as her character in The Devil Wears Prada, without the fashion sense.

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" Simulcast into Space

In a move to increase audiences and box office results for the sci-fi remake The Day the Earth Stood Still, Twentieth Century Fox made history by being the first motion picture company to simultaneously release a film into theaters and into deep space. On Friday, December 12, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL became the world’s first galactic motion picture release. If any civilizations are currently orbiting Alpha Centauri, they will be able to receive and view the film approximately four years from now in the year 2012.

The Dark Knight: An Essay on Justice in an Age of Terror

by Michael Karounos, PhD - Contributing Writer

This article is not a film review in the conventional sense but is rather an essay meant to illustrate my method of analysis. Genre literature and film depend on four building blocks: plot, thought, character, and setting. These were defined by Aristotle 2500 years ago and are still the primary form of analysis. Plot is the action; thought explains the themes and ideas; character is the psychology of character; and setting is the psychology of space.

What Do Teens Really Want? – Romantic Desire, Courtship, and Marriage in "Twilight" and "Four Christmases"

by Dr. Marc T. Newman

Coming out of an advance screening of Twilight, I was surrounded by throngs of breathless adolescents and young adults. By my count, about eighty percent of the audience was female, while the other twenty percent of the audience that was male was, somewhat unwillingly, towed along. The gender split among theatergoers is no surprise to anyone familiar with Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling “chick lit” series on which Catherine Hardwicke’s film is based.
