A Super Man for the Super Bowl

Hi <<First Name>>,

Sunday, my pastor told the story of how Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback Kurt Warner met his wife Brenda. It’s a neat story, and as we talked about it afterward, there were two distinct paths of conversation. The men were amazed: “Dude, that guy worked in a grocery store as a sacker in between pro football teams.” The women were thrilled: “He took his wife’s children out with them on their first date.”

As quarterback for the returning Super Bowl champions, he’s at the top of his game. Most importantly, Kurt is a born again Christians who is very vocal about his faith in God. After the game that put his team into the Super Bowl, he told a stadium full of people “There’s one reason I’m here, it’s because of my Lord up above. I gotta say thanks to Jesus!”

I’m not a football fan, but that’s a man I can admire. It’s not enough, though, to make me watch the Super Bowl game on Sunday.

Instead, I plan to watch a movie or two, "chick flicks" to offset the high testosterone levels of Super Bowl Sunday. Some popcorn, a Diet Pepsi, and a little bit of chocolate will complete the day nicely.

From the screening room,

Industry Interview
"New in Town" Co-Star Siobhan Fallon on Faith & Family
by Angela Walker

Veteran of more than 25 films and with guest appearances on at least 10 different television series, Siobhan’s ability to relate to the ordinary person on the street translates beautifully on film. Her latest film role is Blanche Gunderson, the warmhearted secretary of a plant in New Ulm, Minnesota, that is being re-organized by Lucy Hill (Renee Zellweger), a bigshot from Miami. In spite of being worlds apart in personality, values and experience, the two women eventually develop a friendship that brings new life to the small town.

The role of Blanche in the film could come across as a caricature, but she doesn’t, and the audience respects her.

Siobhan:    She’s clearly a Christian woman and speaks about Jesus throughout the film. When I got the script, I thought, “Oh, they’re going to make fun of her and she’s going to be a goof.”

Then they didn’t, and I thought, “Oh, my gosh! I’ve got to get this part.”

Groundbreaking Documentary "Hollywood on Fire" Shows History of Faith

On the heels of the very successful film Fireproof comes the groundbreaking documentary Hollywood on Fire.  Filled with honest openness, the film reveals the successes and failures of many of today's, and yesterday's, top actors, directors, producers, music artists, executives and media based ministries who are all faith driven.  Hollywood on Fire presents a different view on how Christians in the entertainment industry encounter secularist and Hollywood skeptics, yet do not compromise their faith. Criticized, yet making progress, Hollywood on Fire shows that some of the most influential in Hollywood are Christians.

MovieMinistry's Films to Look For in 2009

by Marc T. Newman, Ph.D.

The first few weeks of any new year are peppered with top-ten lists. Critics re-hash last year’s reviews and place them in a hierarchy -- kind of like their own personal awards show. At MovieMinistry we do things differently. Instead of looking behind, I prefer to look ahead at films that might represent interesting ministry opportunities for those people who use film for outreach, or to create teachable moments.

Keep in mind that I have yet to see most of these films. The speculations built into this preview are based solely on articles that have appeared about these films, their trailers, and plot synopses. Sometimes we get it wrong.

Not Much New in "New in Town"
Three stars
by Angela Walker

Lucy Hill is a driven Miami businesswoman on the fast track to a vice president’s position in her company, and every inch of her screams “business.” Her new assignment is assessing a manufacturing company in New Ulm, Minnesota, for its survivability.

Lucy (Oscar®-winner Renee Zellweger) is a big city girl with assumptions about small town people, and Blanche Gunderson (Siobhan Fallon) and Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick, Jr.) are just the people to challenge those assumptions.

Blanche and Lucy both seem like thinly-drawn caricatures of people we know and aren’t sure we like. But don’t jump too quickly to conclusions. Each soon proves their intelligence and savvy about people and business. Lucy knows if the numbers don’t add up, the plant won’t survive. Blanche knows if the people aren’t treated as they deserve to be, the plant won’t survive.

While romance develops between Lucy and Ted, the heart of this romantic comedy is Lucy’s developing relationship with the town and its people. We all know the course of true romance doesn’t run smoothly, so don’t expect it to here. What you can expect is a lot of laughs at the juxtaposition of cultures and social mores.

The story is predictable but comforting, with no big surprises, but plenty of charming performances.

Rating
After receiving feedback that there was a lot of unnecessary language, the producers edited it out to lower the rating from PG-13 to PG.

Cautions
This film does contain quite a bit of colorful language – both colloquial expressions and some cursing. There are a couple of sexual innuendos, and there is one scene about a woman’s breasts that seemed inordinately long to me. No drugs are used, but there are a couple of instances of drinking, and one character gets drunk.

"This was a good informational/testimonial from a guy who "came out' of the homosexual lifestyle. I felt like it was a great synopsis of many points like if homosexuals are really born that way, why are they the way they are, and how Christians can be free to love the homosexual sinner and still not accept their choice of the homosexual lifestyle."
