Inside this issue... Making a ListHi <<First Name>>, Have you made out your Christmas lists yet? You know: the gift list, the grocery list, the craft list you’re going to do if you have the time, and the Christmas card list?
A couple of weeks ago I made out a list of people I’d like to give gifts to. I listed my family, friends I work with, friends at church, my neighbors, friends I used to work with…the list was pretty long.
As I thought about each one and the special role they play in my life, I realized how rich I am because of them. We laugh together, cry together, worship together, and in general, really enjoy life together.
I hope your list, like mine, causes you to give thanks and appreciate the people around you. Checking my list twice,

“The Day the Earth Stood Still”: A Classic Goes Modern by Angela Walker Fifty-seven years ago director Robert Wise created the science-fiction classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. In a bit of irony worthy of a Hollywood script, the 2008 remake is helmed by director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose), who, as a film student, once had a private dinner with Wise. He had no idea that one day he would be re-imagining Wise’s film for today’s audience. With an unwavering look at the shortcomings of the human race and the condition of our planet today, The Day the Earth Stood Still maintains a prevailing sense of optimism about the future of mankind. The film stars Keanu Reeves, who remarked about the movie, "I think this picture shows some of the worst of ourselves, and then promotes the idea of how we can be the best of ourselves." The movie that has the whole country talking about faith and film. | Industry Interview Scott Derrickson: Director by Angela Walker Critically acclaimed director Scott Derrickson is one of the most vocal Christians working in Hollywood today. After his film The Exorcism of Emily Rose caught the eye of producer and manager Erwin Stoff, Derrickson was invited to direct the remake of the science fiction classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. The original film was very politically-minded, but yours is directed more toward ecological concerns.
Scott The original film has a grand reputation for the very strong political ideas that are in there. I think both the original film and this one are much more about human nature than even the social issues. They’re about how our human nature has this propensity toward self-destruction, and whether or not we have the capacity to avoid that. Review of "The Day The Earth Stood Still"
by Angela Walker
“Change” was a buzzword of the recent Presidential election, and theatergoers who see “The Day the Earth Stood Still” will hear the same theme. But in this remake of the classic 1951 film, it's the aliens who ask for change. In the original movie, the warning was against nuclear arms. In updating the film to 2008, director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter David Scarpa chose a more current concern: going green.
Lessons about our treatment of each other are interspersed with warnings about the toll our lack of care for the environment is taking on the planet. But those subjects never overtake the prevailing theme: is mankind capable of change?
The movie finds its answer not in big government and the United Nations, but rather in the smaller, more intimate relationship between a mother and stepson. Even though the alien Klaatu wants mankind to treat the planet better, it's the change in this relationship that ultimately affects him the most.
Reeves as Klaatu is eerily believable as an alien inhabiting a foreign body, and portrays the alien with a stillness that's in strong contrast to the humans around him. Jennifer Connelly is everything you want a sci-fi heroine to be: strong, intelligent, and compassionate and yet never losing her femininity. Will Smith's son Jaden plays her stepson Jacob with authentic adolescent self-absorption.
Supporting cast includes John Cleese (Monty Python), Oscar®-winner Kathy Bates, and Jon Hamm (Mad Men).
Derrickson, who is one of Hollywood’s most verbal Christians, retained the Christ allegory of the alien character Klaatu, which is very overt in the original. Even thought it’s been a week since I saw the film, there are several moments I’m still thinking about. There are a few powerful statements about the human will and our ability to change, as well as the mixed joys and hardships of life.
Rated PG-13 for some sci-fi disaster images and violence (tame by today's standards), The Day the Earth Stood Still releases nationwide on Friday, December 12. There is no offensive language, sexual content, or inappropriate material in this film. Any child that can handle watching "Star Wars" should be fine with this movie.
