Inside this issue... It was a dark and stormy night...Hi <<First Name>>, Do you like films that scare you? Personally, I’m not a fan of horror films, but I am a fan of great books. I read books by Christian thriller writers Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti but not at night because I have a very vivid imagination.
I saw The Visitation (based on a Peretti novel) and Thr3e (based on Dekker novel) when they came out because I had a personal interest in the films. The Visitation was filmed locally and produced by my friends Bobby and Kevin Downes, and Kevin had a role in Thr3e and executive-produced it.
Last week I watched the movie House so I could review it. It's based on a book Dekker and Peretti wrote together. This intense and scary movie was made by Namesake Entertainment (the makers of The Visitation, Thr3e and Hangman's Curse) and comes out in theaters on November 7th. To the producer's disappointment, House received an R rating. "We wanted to make edits or cuts to make the movie available to a PG-13 fan base but the MPAA said that the whole story was just too intense... We hope that people can judge the film on its own merit and appreciate the film's themes of good vs. evil and sin and redemption, " said Producer Ralph Winter.
Is there a place for horror films with a Christian worldview? Scott Derrickson, creator of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, said horror is a genre of non-denial. “It’s about admitting that there is evil in the world, and recognizing that there is evil within us, and that we’re not in control, and that the things that we are afraid of must be confronted in order for us to relinquish that fear. And I think that the horror genre serves a great purpose in bolstering our understanding of what is evil and therefore better defining what is good."
