Euan Semple's May Newsletter Welcome to my May Newsletter and especially to those of you have joined the list since my last email. I am still finding my way with the frequency, format and content of the newsletter so it will almost certainly change over the coming months but I hope it will provide you with interesting news and give you the inspiration to get more involved in the world of social media.
Ning When people say they want to get started using social tools and need something for their specific group or small business I usually suggest they set up a Ning site. Started by Marc Andreeson, who became famous for the original Mozilla browser and Netscape, Ning allows users to easily set up a mini Facebook with profile pages, forums, blogs and all the usual tools that go to make up Web 2.0. It can be used for everything from small groups to large and is very easy to set up and administer. Amazingly Ning has just announced that it has reached 1,000,000 sites serving 22,000,000 registered users.
Squarespace As some of you may already know I recently moved my blog to a new address and started using a new tool called Squarespace. My initial reason for trying Squarespace was frustration at the inability of Wordpress to do what I wanted with the look and feel of my business site without needing to fight with html for even simple changes. Squarespace allows me to do things that used to take hours in seconds, and to see my changes happen "live". I have also wanted to move my blog to my own domain name for some time so I decided to bite the bullet, move the blog to Squarespace, and get everything under one roof.
You can see the results of my efforts here and if you want a really easy way to set up a hosted site or weblog I can really recommend Squarespace.
Speaking at Reboot I am going to be speaking at this year's Reboot in Copenhagen and as ever with a subtle, one word, light hand on the tiller, direction of "Action" Thomas Madsen-Mygdal has set the tone for this year's conference. Thomas is keen that we move on from theorising and speculating to doing and my session will be about about ten actions that I believe make a difference when trying to move things forward in business and organisational life.
Social Media Tip Some of you may not consider email social media but it is still the way that most people, certainly in business, communicate with each other electronically. I myself am still a big fan of email yet I frequently have people complaining to me about it - more precisely complaining about what others are doing with it. To this end I have resurrected and dusted down a Top Ten Tips for Email which I wrote many moons ago but which hopefully still makes sense and might help.
