Ronit's Corner...
We
all know the New Year is the time to set new goals. As we know, nothing will change unless we set goals. So looking and feeling good are always at the top of my list of goals. Better eating habits and a focus on exercise bring me great happiness. I really enjoy soups and great salads.

Here’s a favorite salad recipe:

Layer of mixed greens
Layer of thinly sliced fennel
½ thinly sliced cut to small pieces of blood orange
Crystallized walnuts (available at Whole Foods)
Thinly sliced shaved red onion

Dressing:
¼ cup rice vinegar, 2 tbsp oil, lemon juice and salt & pepper
Toss it and add your favorite protein if you like (chicken, salmon, shrimp or scallops)

Mark Mincola, Ph.D., a good friend and well-known natural health care practitioner, shared an interesting secret.  He says studies have shown that bad habits, even long-term habits, -- like driving & talking on the cell phone – can be reversed. To make the break, you need to build your left-side brain so that it equals your right-side. In just 10 minutes a day, you can make important changes. The more your right and left brain is balanced, the less acidic build up in your body, the more happy you are and the better you look.  Monks in Tibet have both sides of their brain the same size, Westerners have huge left sides and very small right sides. As promised last issue, I have details to share from my recent meeting with two surgeons from Oral Surgery South in Norwell.  Dr. Joseph Leibovici and Dr. Tony Rubeiz are Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons with offices in Quincy and Norwell. They are now offering Botox for facial wrinkles and Juvederm fillers for lip augmentation, facial folds and wrinkles. We met at their beautiful Norwell office where we discussed these hot new procedures for 2008. Let me share!! Juverderm injectable gel is a filler that can help smooth out facial wrinkles and folds, with results that have been proven to last up to 6 months or longer. Botox Cosmetic is a quick and minimally invasive procedure consisting of a few tiny injections. Crows feet, worry lines, and laugh lines are all treatable with this procedure. Both are quick in-office procedures. You can learn more at their website, OralSurgerySouth.com. Ann, an employee at their office, has experienced the Botox procedure and her favorite part is noticing the gentle lift it gives her eyebrows, (hmmm, I like that!)... Story to be continued!!!

My friend, Valerie, and I went to Boston to enjoy some holiday cheer at Sorellina, a beautiful, posh, NYC-style restaurant in the Back Bay.  It’s a sister restaurant to Mistral, but with an Italian menu. My favorite part was the bar and the deep-fried Sardines with red sauce appetizer. I think it’s a great place to start an evening with a quick bite & chat in the bar. visit Sorellina.com.

Ronit

Hair Tips for Winter 2008...
Amy Fournier, Maxime senior colorist, discovered a great way to help fine hair look great. For those of us with very fine hair that gets limp and fly away in the winter, there is a solution. The Marilyn brushes are great for creating volume in fine hair. They are easier to handle than the round brush and because of the combination of plastic and boar bristles, they allow the hair to be lifted and smoothed at the same time. This creates volume and bounce, while keeping the hair free from fly-aways. The Marilyn brush combined with the Bumble and Bumble Styling Cream (used on the roots only) is the perfect combination to help fight against the limp locks that winter causes. To also aid in the fight against fly-aways, use the Does It All hairspray at the end of your blowdry to finish the look.

Laurent Mendez, Maxime senior stylist, has a few “style cocktails” for dry, winter days. As you know, we always wants you looking great, so here are the recipes:

The 4 S's:  Sexy, Silky, Shiny, Straight Hair
Ingredients
1. A mist of thickening spray (bumble)
2. A nut of straight gel (bumble)
3. A pea of defrizz (bumble)
Directions
1. Spray thickening on the root
2. Combine together straight and defrizz in the palms. Apply to the hair, avoiding the scalp.
3. Power blow dry 50 to 80%, according to the texture of the hair (straight, wavy, curly). Start by lifting the roots with a good rub and stretching the shaft between your fingers.
4. With a flat boar brush, smooth out and straighten the hair from root to end, starting with the front hair line.

The Romantic-Glamorous
Follow this recipe and you'll achieve the 4 S's with Success !!!
Ingredients
1. A mist of thickening spray
2. A nut of grooming crème
3. A drop of defrizz
4. A splash (for more hold if needed) of styling crème
Directions
1. Spray thickening on the root.
2. Mix grooming, defrizz and styling by rubbing in the palms. Apply all over the hair, avoiding the roots.
3. Power blow dry, starting with the root with a circular motion on the fingers to give volume. Dry the hair very well without tension.
4. With a Bionic brush, smooth out the hair section by section. Roll over 50% of the length, holding a couple of secs without heat, and unroll.
5. Finish by opening the blowout with the hand and the blow dryer to break down the sectioning and make sure the hair is completely dry.
Enjoy without any Moderation!!!

Dry Cutting is for any hair texture...
Maxime senior stylist, Gina Hilchey, demonstrates how very curly hair can be easily cut dry as well as wet. Dry cutting is done by design and attention to details, allowing the hair to fall naturally.

Here is an easy way to create a new look for curls or wavy hair. First, allow your curls to fall naturally (style hair as you normally would with product and a diffuser). Next, take a curling iron and wrap one inch to two inch sections around the one inch curling iron. Hold for about three seconds. Start with top layer of hair and work your way down. To preserve length, don't wrap your section to your root.  Do not be precise with sections, you don't need this to be perfect. Also, do not go crazy with hairspray, you want this to look natural and shinny. As you can see, Ronit's tight curls have become soft, sexy loose waves. A quick and easy fifteen minute style that transforms to a completely different look. Great for straight hair as well.
