Louis' Team In Training Progress Report - Number 2 Hello Again. It's time for another update on my Team In Training adventure for America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride - 100-mile century bike ride - June 7 How am I doing? Fund-raising Your generous, tax deductible donations continue to come in, bringing me within $60 of the $3000 mark. Remember that I have committed to raise a minimum of $3900 but would sure like to raise more than that. If you haven't yet entered your support to help those with Leukemia and other blood cancers, now is a good time to go to http://pages.teamintraining.org/los/ambbr09/lcetorelli to donate online. Thank you! Training Training is progressing well. In February I logged over 350 miles on my bike (yes my seat is sore). I've been regularly riding in the hills of Palos Verdes. For those who don't live in the area, PV is a peninsula with a beautiful craggy-cliff coastline. It sits anywhere between 200 and 1500 feet above sea level. The views from the hills are spectacular and even though climbing those hills is difficult, there's always a visual reward at the top.
The team rides are getting more informative and longer. Last Saturday, we went on a challenging 38 mile ride that included a 1000+ foot climb up Mandeville Canyon Road. It's a little over 5 miles of climbing that gets increasingly steeper as you approach the top. That's about 35-40 minutes of pedaling uphill! It takes only about 6 minutes to descend, hitting speeds in excess of 30 mph. We've also been practicing pacelining, the process of rotating all riders in a small group through the lead position. The leader pulls the group briefly and then drops off to the back of the line. This rotation of leaders continues throughout. The purpose is to create an aerodynamic advantage for the group. It's remarkable how much faster you can ride with a pace line. Our coach estimate that the aerodynamic advantage of the pace line is around 10-25%, depending on bike speed, wind speed, location in the pace line, and the size of the person ahead of you.
