Meet a
FreeFoodie

Freefoods NYC was created specifically for busy professionals who value their health, have an active lifestyle and still love to enjoy full flavored, creative food on a daily basis.  We take great pride in the fact that our guests have embraced our philosophy, which gives us even more incentive to continue fostering a healthy approach to our seasonal menus.

Since we opened our first store, 18 months ago, we have been fortunate to become acquainted with many of our regular guests, many who have their own inspiring stories to share.  This week, we sat down with one of our favorite foodies, Tamara Iglesias, who works at a nearby hedge fund and is an avid Triathlete.  We’ve even decided to incorporate some of her feedback into the Spring/Summer 2009 menu (coming in late April) as we strive to be increasingly healthier every new season.

Tamara, which foods work best for your active lifestyle?

I currently live on about 75-100% raw and vegan foods and almost 100% organic and/or locally grown foods.  My diet is based on unprocessed and uncooked plant based foods like fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, and grains.  Since I’m allergic to processed corn, wheat and dairy this type of lifestyle is ideal for me.   I wake up everyday feeling great and experience high levels of energy throughout the day.

How do you find the time to eat this way?

If you can find a few extra minutes in your day for preparation and planning, you’ll find yourself with hours of additional energy.  Since changing my eating habits I require less sleep, have a more positive outlook on life and feel completely rejuvenated.

Any tricks for squeezing all these healthy meals into your busy schedule?

My days start with making two smoothies; one “green” smoothie and one “superfood” smoothie and I sip these throughout the day.  I have three green smoothie recipes that I use regularly.
  • Swiss chard, mint and pear
  • Spinach and peaches
  • Strawberries, romaine and banana.
My superfood smoothies are made from fresh thai coconuts (using the coconut water and the meat), homemade hemp milk or almond milk, blue green algae, maca powder, goji berries, raw chocolate and frozen berries.

When were you first introduced to such
healthy cuisine?

When my grandmothers were diagnosed with breast cancer my mother introduced them to a macrobiotic diet.   The diet is known for its many healing qualities and consists predominantly of grains, vegetables, and beans.  In addition, no meat, dairy, sugar, processed or refined foods are consumed.  As a matter of convenience she placed my entire family on the same diet.  My grandmothers are both cancer survivors and are alive and well today.

What do you like most when you are eating
at FreeFoods?

My “go to” lunch  is the “Special Green Juice” and a custom salad with spicy greens, guacamole, tomatoes, cucumber, hearts of palm, olives and lemon herb dressing.  I personally like to add two heaping tablespoons of spirulina (an awesome source of protein) to my salad everyday as well.  The vegan roasted red pepper soup is the best and my other favorites include  the green smoothie, the cacao raz smoothie, the raw choco/vanilla macaroons, the raw/vegan hazelnut tart and all of the raw/vegan items on the market table, in particular the coconut dumplings and the raw vegan flaxseed-herb crust pizza).
